About the Dragon Magazine Article Index.Dragon Magazine is the official support magazine for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Each issue presents new rules options, reviews of new supplements, advice for running a game, rules clarifications, and suggestions for new ways to play. Dragon's first issue was published in June 1976 and is still published to the current day. Unfortunately, the magazine has not been formally indexed since issue #112, back in August of 1986. This site, then, is an attempt to provide the user community with a simple, yet thorough, index to the contents of Dragon Magazine from issue #1 to the current issue. There are other Dragon Magazine Index sites out there. Two of them are Dragondex and Tholos. Although both of these indexes provide indexing services for every issue, they can be difficult to search because of their format. The user must browse through one or more HTML files and sort through subject headings without an understanding of how these headings fit together or how many apply to a single article. It is the objective of this index to provide faster record retrieval by offering a search function. It is also our objective to provide more accurate search results by indexing each record with a number of subject headings and keywords. The Thesaurus is your guide to the terms used to index the article collection. In it, you can see the hierarchies of subject headings, see how different terms relate to one another, and view scope notes which describe in what context the subject headings should be used. It also lists several terms which, although commonly used by players, are too narrow to be used for the subject index. This provides users with a sort of footpath from their own concepts to the vocabulary used in the database. It should be noted that several areas of the magazines have not been indexed at this time.
The thesaurus is still growing. You may consider a concept in an article to be a great point of access, yet the thesaurus may not consider it at all. Better subject access to the articles can only come over time with input from you, the user. As such, we welcome your comments and feedback. Please feel free to E-MAIL US with any questions or comments. |
